Under the supervision of the Crew Supervisor of Locksmiths in the Access Control Unit, the Carpenter (Access Control) performs general carpentry work involved in the layout, construction, repair, and maintenance of doors, locks, buildings, equipment and furnishings related to Access Control.  Other related work is performed as required.  


The Carpenter (Access Control) is designated as an Essential Service Employee title.  As an Essential Service Employee, the Carpenter (Access Control) is required, unless otherwise instructed by the supervisor or other employee designated by the University, to report to work when the campus is closed or is in a situation that requires a delayed opening or early closure.  




  • Repairs broken and malfunctioning doors and closers (including minor adjustments to electrical doors), door and panic hardware, furniture, glass panes and other types of equipment; and makes and installs wood and plastic signs, trim, doors, shelving, and lockable cabinets.
  • Constructs and repairs buildings and structures, making use of any appropriate wood joints such as dovetail, miter, mortise, and tenon.
  • Sets and operates a variety of woodworking machines including power saws and attachments, planers, jointers, sanders, electric drills, and routers.
  • Makes emergency carpentry repairs.
  • Instructs assistants (such as Repairers) in carpentry work and ensures their safety, custody, and work progress.
  • Creates time and materials estimates. Maintains essential records and creates reports of personnel, time, supplies, and work completed.
  • Utilizes all necessary tools, equipment and systems as required by the University, the Division, and the work unit.
  • Complies with applicable occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders.  Understands, and follows all safety rules and precautions.
  • Performs appropriate PM on all Access Control carpentry-related entities.
  • Provides appropriate communication and customer service to all external and internal customers.
  • Ensures that all staff and customer interactions are professional, courteous, and respectful.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.




  • Repairs broken and malfunctioning doors and closers, door hardware, window cords and sashes, screens, furniture, glass panes and other types of equipment; and makes and installs wood and plastic signs, window frames and sashes, screens, trim, doors, wood flooring, ceiling tiles, siding, sheathing, stairs, railing porches, shelving, lockable cabinets, and simple furniture.
  • Replaces damaged ceiling panels, tiles, wall coverings (sheet rock, paneling etc), or floor segments such as inlaid parquet pieces.
  • Builds bookcases, cabinets, tables, brackets, stands, screens, partitions, and other types of equipment.
  • Makes various types of rafter cuts; lays out and cuts stair horse stringers; erects scaffolding; constructs and installs cribbing and form for concrete; sets and operates a variety of woodworking machines including power saws and attachments, planers, jointers, sanders, electric drills, and routers.
  • Builds and makes repairs to special truck bodies.


Experience: Three (3) full years of experience in carpentry work involving the layout, construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings, office equipment, and furnishings. 


Education:  Appointees will be required to possess a current driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform the essential duties of the position.        


Skills: Required skills include:

  • Knowledge of methods and problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing and maintaining buildings, furniture, structural openings, windows, sashes, screens, door hardware, and other  equipment.
  • Ability to carry out directions and/or work from blueprints or drawings.
  • Ability to analyze problems involving carpentry installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair work, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to make carpentry repairs and to do carpentry construction work.
  • Ability to execute efficient and safe use of standard carpentry tools and equipment including, planers, joiners, and band and crosscut saws, shapers, and other specialized tools and machinery.
  • Ability to prepare reports of equipment and materials used, time spent, and work completed.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to order, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Ability to observe the required safety precautions.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the University.
  • Ability to sufficiently read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.

C16: $41,489.92- $58,369.96


*NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission’s formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to step four $47,116.60
