    Reporting to the Director of Study Abroad and International Programs, the Study Abroad Coordinator advises students on the full array of study abroad and study away options for the semester, year or summer. The Coordinator will also administer the application process, conduct outreach and manage events.


    • Conduct individual and group advising for students on academic and personal goals, program selection, health and safety issues, inter-cultural competency, etc.
    • Lead large-group information and pre-departure sessions for students, prospective students and parents.
    • Administer nomination, application and approval processes for programs, monitoring compliance with requirements and policies and maintaining accurate and up-to-date student records (through the use of Terra Dotta software).
    • Maintain, collect, and update program data in the Terra Dotta system and run reports and queries, as needed.
    • Assist with management, administration and marketing of MSU faculty-led programs, as needed.
    • Work cooperatively with faculty and other administrative offices on campus.
    • Liaise with appropriate colleagues inside and outside the University (on-campus offices, partner schools, security and insurance agencies, etc.) for routine matters and for crisis management in the event of study abroad emergencies.
    • Manage an effective Study Abroad Peer Advisor program for returnees and assist with re-entry programming.
    • Supervise student assistants.
    • Assist with the collection and analysis of study abroad data and generate reports.
    • Organize promotional and recruitment materials and events.
    • Conduct outreach across campus to promote awareness of and participation in Study Abroad.
    • Assist in RFP process for vendors and services, as needed.
    • Develop and maintain content for flyers, handbooks, newsletters, website, and other informational literature for students, faculty, parents, and other offices Actively promote study abroad through social media,
    • Develop an understanding of the University’s curriculum, degree requirements, and academic policies to ensure accurate and proactive advising for students.
    • Assist with visa advising, as needed.
    • Assist with other Office of International Engagement administrative tasks, as needed.
    • Other projects and emerging tasks as assigned.
    • Ability/willingness to work some evenings and week-ends. 
    • Ability/willingness to participate in conferences and occasional site visits.


    The Office of International Engagement is seeking an experienced, capable person with knowledge of important principles and issues in study abroad advising, intercultural competency, and program management.


    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Previous relevant experience in higher education, advising/mentoring undergraduate students and/or in student programming.
    • Excellent customer service and communications skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively communicate in a variety of situations, including interpersonal and formal large-group settings to multiple audiences (students, parents, faculty, staff) and to work in a diverse environment.
    • Outstanding organization skills and superb attention to detail.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, especially during peak times of the year.
    • Keen problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent technology skills including proficiency with social media.


    • Master’s degree in international education, higher education, public administration or a related field preferred.
    • Previous extensive experience with Terra Dotta data management software.
    • Experience as a Study Abroad Advisor.
    • Familiarity with MSU technology such as Banner and People Soft.
    • Basic understanding of web design and video editing; proficiency with standard office software (word processing, database, presentation, spreadsheet, desktop publishing).
    • Familiarity with passport/visa advising and visa application processes for both domestic and international students; experience with US Department of State resources and requirements for travelers.
    • Familiarity with major professional organizations in the field of international education, such as NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad’s Code of Ethics and Principles of Good Practice.
    • Some experience living, studying or working abroad.
    • Some travel may be required.
