    The College of the Arts (CART) seeks an experienced Academic Advisor to provide advising services for students in its Department of Art and Design (ARDN) for students majoring in Animation/Illustration, Visual Communication Design, Product Design, Visual Arts, Art Education, and Fashion Studies plus minors in selected areas. Reporting to the Department’s Chair and under the leadership of the CART Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Communications, the ARDN Academic Advisor will advise students regarding the sequence of their majors as well as general education and elective course requirements.  The advisor will also help advance and participate in initiatives which support students’ retention and timely completion of their degrees.

    Responsibilities

    • Under the direction of the Department Chair and Office of the Dean and in cooperation with university-wide initiatives, provide year-round advising and registration assistance to students in close collaboration with academic program coordinators, faculty, Registrar’s office and other campus units.
    • Provide advising to on-board students during Freshman and Transfer Orientations and to enrolled students to support their academic journey.  Guide new students seeking program admission, in collaboration with faculty.
    • Assist students with understanding the analysis of their academic progress; the four-year-graduation-plan for their major (including all course requirements); final audits; how to navigate university procedures; participation in national and international study programs; and effects of changing a major in order to ensure completion of their degrees.
    • Evaluate transcripts of transfer applicants to determine course equivalencies which satisfy major requirements. Evaluate transcripts of seniors to determine eligibility for graduation.
    • Establish plan to accommodate both scheduled and walk-in advising hours as well as individual and group advising practices, where appropriate.
    • Maintain, update, and communicate CART/ARDN advising policies and procedures and provide training and support to faculty in their role as peer advisors where appropriate.
    • Act upon early alerts issued for students and advise/make referrals accordingly. Outreach to non-registered students to foster retention. Conduct intrusive advising for students where needed in relation to probation or suspension.
    • Implement academic actions, where needed, related to exceptions (e.g. credit adjustments, course overloads, late registrations and permits).
    • Organize Freshman Learning Communities including student placements and pre-registration.
    • Where related to advising, liaise with Chair’s office staff to Inform process of course scheduling and enrollments.
    • Participation in college and university events related to advising, recruiting, and other student activities, with some of these events occurring on nights and weekends.
    • Develop and implement presentations, trainings, and workshops that relay academic policies and support student success.
    • Establish and maintain relationships throughout the campus community in order to provide student referrals, as needed, to Career Services, psychological and disability services, Dean of Students office and other services on campus.
    • Maintain and update ARDN program curriculum guides and 4-year academic plans.
    • Learn and utilize information technology related to advising and tracking students (e.g. Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish) Participate in compiling and analyzing data for reporting and assessment, and making recommendations for continuous program improvement.
    • Work collaboratively with CART Student Services/Recruitment Coordinator, peer advisors, and other stakeholder positions across campus. Attend and participate in meetings as related to assigned responsibilities.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

    • Master's degree, preferably in Counseling, Student Affairs or Higher Education Administration, or equivalency based on extensive experience related to the position and/or other professional credentials. Additional background or studies in the arts, a plus.\
    • Minimum of 2-3 years’ professional experience in advising in a higher education setting.
    • Able to advise students concerning Department/university programs, activities, and services.
    • Ability to work with diverse faculty, staff and students.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills.
    • Able to work independently and as part of a team. Comfort with multiple reporting relationships.
    • Able to leverage technology in advising activities.
    • Must be detail/results oriented; able to handle multiple projects simultaneously; able to work some evenings and weekends when programming requires.

    PREFERRED:

    • Experience with art and design curricula and appreciation for students working in these disciplines is highly preferred.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of traditional, non-traditional and at-risk student populations.
    • Experience with Banner systems and Degreeworks.
