    Montclair State University is seeking an experienced frontline fundraiser to serve as the Director of Development for the College of Education and Human Services. The College of Education and Human Services is one of the premier schools of education and human services in the nation. With nationally accredited programs in education, health and human development, the college is engaged in research and practice with the aims of increasing equity, social justice, democratic practice, critical thinking, and reflection.  The college has a long and proud history of excellence and innovation in teaching, research, and scholarship, and serves as a leader in preparing professionals to work collaboratively to change people’s lives. The College is housed in University Hall, a technologically advanced academic building, featuring a 500- person capacity conference center with panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline.


    The ideal candidate should be a proven relationship builder, effective communicator, and performance-oriented manager to serve in the role of Director of Development ("the Director"). The Director organizes, plans and executes a development strategy and fundraising program to secure major gift support from alumni, friends, business leaders, and other constituents. The Director is a member of the Development team engaged in launching the public phase of the University's largest comprehensive campaign.


    Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts and Development Leadership, the Director will structure, lead, manage and oversee all development activities for the assigned college, school, unit and/or combination thereof.

    • In fulfilling this role and the related responsibilities, the Director will collaborate with the assigned  Dean, Director, and/or senior administrator to identify, cultivate, solicit and close major gifts of $25,000 or more.
    • The Director will oversee, manage and maintain an active moves management process with a portfolio of 125+ major gift prospects.
    • In addition, the Director will work closely with the University Advancement team to achieve the University's goals and objectives in the areas of Major Gifts, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications, Advancement  Services, Donor Relations, and Endowment Management.
    • The Director should have a comprehensive track record of substantial fundraising accomplishments along with a consistent history of value-added success while working within a team environment.
    • Working with the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts and Development Leadership and the Dean/Director of the assigned college or school, the Director will serve a key role in conveying a clear sense of focus, competency and credibility to those who invest in and support the University's mission, students, programs, and other activities.
    • To ensure success of the University's fundraising program activities, the Director will be expected to perform other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts and Development Leadership; the Associate Vice President for Development; and/or the Vice President for University Advancement.

    Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills in relating to University Advancement colleagues; University administrators, board members, and academic leaders; existing and prospective donors; external audiences; and other key constituencies.

    • Demonstrated success in one-on-one communications and sustained relationship building with donors, prospects, administrators, faculty, staff and colleagues.
    • Ability to creatively manage development activities and identify fundraising opportunities in an entrepreneurial, innovative, forward-thinking and performance-driven  manner.
    • Customer service orientation that is donor-centric and collaborative.
    • Extensive working knowledge of identified "best practices" and leading-edge principles in the areas of development, fundraising, moves management, financial management, planned giving, donor stewardship, proposal preparation, and resource budgeting.
    • Proven ability in leading, managing and organizing multiple projects with energy, clarity, optimism, collaboration, diplomacy, and integrity.
    • Demonstrated track record of soliciting, closing, and stewarding leadership gifts of $25,000 or more.
    • Ability to travel beyond campus and work during evening and weekend hours.
    • Intellectual curiosity, personal accountability, emotional intelligence, collaborative mindset, and openness to new ideas and constructive feedback.


    • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university or college.
    • Significant or equivalent experience in the areas of major gift fundraising, campaign fundraising, and prospect management.  Desired level of such experience is at least seven years. Preference may be given to candidates with higher education fundraising experience.
