    Reporting to the AVP for Benefits, Compensation and Payroll the Director of Payroll has responsibility for leading the development and implementation of policies, practices, and administrative systems in the Payroll Unit. With the recent implementation of Workday, this leadership role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact during a period where the University is proactively implementing enhancements to its systems to strengthen and support the University’s ascending position within higher education.


    The Director will lead the payroll team in the day-to-day administration and operations of the Payroll Unit, and will oversee the programs, policies and procedures related to employee compensation, including payroll and timekeeping, for full-time and part-time employee population of approximately 5,600. The Director is a subject matter expert with deep functional knowledge of payroll, and is responsible for the long-term and short-term planning for the Unit. The Director oversees the execution of on-time and accurate payrolls, supervises the payroll team in preparing payrolls, and ensures compliance with state and federal tax laws and regulations.


    The Director collaborates with other leaders within the Division of Human Resources and across the University to ensure appropriate communications and handling of payroll related matters. The Director will lead and provide guidance relative to effective processes and strategies. Supervises and develops the Payroll team, facilitating opportunities to improve individual capability and manage performance against job responsibilities and Division goals.

    • Two years' experience leading the payroll function with an organization with a minimum of 2,000 employees on payroll.
    • Demonstrable interpersonal and problem-solving skills with a proven track record of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with a wide range of employee constituents.
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills.



    • Undergraduate and/or Master’s Degree in a related field.
    • 7-10 years of progressive experience in Payroll.
    • Experience with Workday HCM, Payroll and Benefit modules strongly preferred.
    • Superior Excel or Access database skills.
    • Federal and State tax regulation experience.
    • Higher education and/or public sector experience in a unionized environment.
    • Certified Payroll Professional designation.
    • Experience managing the payroll implications of employee leaves
    • Experience leading a payroll group with a large unionized employee group and implementing union contracts.
